Ficbits the Second: 649 Edition

Doesn't look like that Big Bang fic is going to happen after all, guys. I haven't even started it, and although I thought I'd come up with some pretty cool ideas they are just not in the mood to cooperate and line up into one story that would actually meet the challenge's requirements. Ah, well. Back to the backburner with that idea; hopefully something will come of it some other time.

In the meantime, then, I come bearing moar ficbits! These puppies all happen to be from my "649" folder, a.k.a. the stories I'm trying to write for my 649 short fiction project. Most of them are old—some date back to 2007 or 2008, when I'd first started this project under the name "493" and I hadn't told anyone about it yet—and all, predictably, still unfinished and probably nowhere near close. y u write so slow, self. I have quite a few, actually, and will be breaking them up into several posts (especially because a few of the "bits" I want to share are several paragraphs long by themselves). I'm even making the posts ahead of time and queuing them so they'll show up at regular intervals, ensuring updates for a few weeks to come! Activity? On this blog? Madness!

As a disclaimer, I'm not even sure I want to finish some of these. A few I can look at and say "yes, I still love this idea, I will get my rear in gear and do something with it for srs", but others... eh. I guess I've seen some of these for the gargantuan plot/logic holes that they are (the articuno writes warnings to trespassers in Latin! why doesn't it just write them in English when that's what everyone around it speaks? except the traveling hero, who conveniently does understand Latin for no discernible reason? uh...), and others I've just lost interest in. It is still kind of fun to see what I was able to get out, though, and these are some of the few examples of my unfinished, on-hiatus pieces that are written well enough to not make me want to stab my eyes out, so I don't mind sharing them. Maybe if one gets a particularly good response I might even be inspired to pick it up again in earnest, though I make no promises there.

Things I Should Not Be Tempted To Do:

Give in to a sudden, inexplicable but irresistible urge to make Pokémon-themed/powered superheroes.

A lot of superheroes.

Like, an entire Marvel/DC Universe full of Pokémon superheroes. And a Marvel/DC to publish all of the comic books and make action figures and stuff.

I have a massive list of "this pokémon would be even remotely mildly interesting to make a hero/villain/superpower/gadget/alien race/sgoibohsg out of", and another one of interesting pokémon attack names to use, and piles of basic origin stories and stupid gimmicks. I even have a list of imprints that "ExtremeSpeed Comics" uses to publish different kinds of stories.

Only a few actual characters vaguely defined in my head at the moment; they haven't been there long enough to be much more than generic-sounding hero/villain ideas, and I don't have any heroes matched up with any specific rogues' galleries or whatever, but they are still starting to grow on me and are begging me to do... something with them while I come up with even more ideas for other characters on the side. I just spent the last I-don't-even-know trying (and mostly failing buuut) to doodle costumes for "Teravolt" and "Turboblaze" and trying to think of interesting and over-the-top ways for them to be involved with a fictional version of Team Plasma, and before that it was setting up the evil associates of Fat Cat, the cliché overweight skajillionaire creepy ailurophile guy, and his cadre of glameow-themed hookers with guns and black belts in every martial art ever.

...and deciding that one of those associates, in spite of hating Fat Cat's ample guts in canon, is often shipped with him in what is probably the most popular ExtremeSpeed character pairing ever. What the hell are you doing, brain, why is this a thing you are even thinking about and why does it amuse you so. I guess it's because Nekomata would be furious if he knew legions of fangirls wrote terrible slash about him and his employer, and I do so enjoy making my characters furious. But still. WTF, brain. (Please quit while you're ahead and don't get into the actual Nekomata/Fat Cat slash itself.)

I don't know what I want to actually do with all of this stuff; actual comics are out of the question because I am the least consistent artist ever, but aside from that... I'm not sure! Right now I'm just having fun with the designing and worldbuilding, and also silly references to superhero tropes and stuff. Maybe some fanfics, maybe some interactive fanfiction, useful way to practice drawing humans if nothing else... could be anything, really, but it's early days yet and right now I'm still in "make heroes/villains/etc. out of ALL THE POKÉMON" mode right now so it's hard to think too far ahead.

tl;dr, this sort of thing is why I will never get anything useful done ever again. The best part is how I'm not even a huge comic book/superhero fan, so I don't even know where this sudden need is coming from. :/ Stop being so goddamn interesting, Teravolt and Turboblaze and Fat Cat and Nekomata and Lucky Kitty and all of you. Stop it immediately and get out of my head. (Did I mention you're interfering with my ability to get actual work done on my big bang fic?)

Pokémon Big Bang Brainstorming

I was reading through stuff on someone's LJ when I came across this: the first-ever Pokémon Big Bang. To summarize for those who don't know what a big bang is (which more or less includes me, lol), it's basically a call out to creative people in a fandom to create "multimedia works" over a period of a few months, multimedia here defined as "a fanfic of at least 10,000 words and some drawings/music/fanvids/bluh/art to go along with it". Interested people work in teams consisting of a writer, a few artists and a beta reader and collaborate to put out the fic and its accompanying pretty stuff before the big bang is over. I'd never heard of these things before seeing that little mention, but it seems like a fun idea.

...a fun idea that I was going to let pass me by this time, or at least only join as a beta reader, until I realized that 10,000 words is equivalent to six days of writing at a NaNoWriMo pace, and that if I could come up with a completed outline and think of the writing that way then it's actually feasible for me do. Pretty up the outline, spend a week typing until my keyboard catches fire, have the better part of two months and three weeks to edit it/show it to a potential beta/let the artists get started on their respective artings. Realistically it'll probably take me a bit longer than that due to crippling self-esteem issues, but as long as I keep telling myself I can have it done in ~1 week I think I might be okay. Sure would be nice to get some actual writing completed, at least. Point is, I'm almost 100% sure I'm going to join as a writer, and the next step is figuring out what to write about.
